Damage to Mexico

The problem of the insecurity in Mexico is a matter that has me very worried, insecurity has become our “pan de cada dia”. We read, hear and see by all the possible media scaring news about the growing of insecurity in our country.
It is so much the fear to be kidnap or victim of the insecurity in Mexico that a few months ago there was a big manifestation in Mexico’s City. People got together and dressed in white as a symbol of wanting and demanding peace in and security in Mexico.
The only bad thing about these manifestations is that politicians are using this type of things to win votes, and a peace matter is turning into politicians’ affairs.

Smokescreens from the government

As history tells, the government is Mexico has always tried to hide what goes on with the reforms in the country. For example, many people believe that the AH1N1 breakout was used by the government as a smokescreen to hide the current problems they were facing like the legalization of marijuana.

I don't think that the government using smokescreens is an ethical thing because they, in a way, "fool" us by not letting us see what is really happening.

I want to say that the Mexican government needs to tell people what happens in the country, and not use another things to hide it. This is why we still live in a country like this, because we don't feel secure that the government has the confidence to tell us what is going on. And because of this, we neither have the confidence to trust in the government's movements.

Mexico has to progress like those other countries that do not create a lot of smokescreens to hide their problems. Mexico has to realize that people want the country to be honest even if it is going through hard times. People in Mexico will then realize that the country is actually doing its job and will start feeling that Mexico is progressing.

This is list of places were in the last 7 days they have been registered earthquakes and repetitions of 4.5 degrees and up. The list looks like if it would never end and it is getting me worried. Before the present year they have never registered so much earthquakes of these intensities. The consequences of these are terrible.

Lots of people have died, some other are in danger and in extreme conditions. Help and support from countries have been arriving to those countries that have been affected by Mother Nature. But, won't there be a point were getting help from other countries will be almost impossible I know that there are lots of countries in the world, but those countries that are able to make big donations are also being affected and what will happen to the needing people when they stop receiving help?. I just hope we never get to that point because I don't even want to think in the consequences, they should be terrible.

Could all these earthquakes be a consequence from global warming or are they just part of a natural cycle of planet earth I really don't know, and right know all I can think is when will they stop. I want them to end now before they cause more damage and worst things or before the people I know and love end harmed.

México in Shangai

Mexico will be an active participant in the Universal Expo 2010 in Shangai that will take place from March the 1st until October. The topic of the Mexican pavilion is Living Better and will have 4,000 square meters.These pavilions are prepared to be visited by 70 million people and to show them Mexico’s current projects.

Strategic alliances will be established to implement models to promote trade, investment, and tourism.


The Mexican pavilion will house a restaurant that will serve national haute cuisine, a crafts shop, an area devoted to promotion and a Business Center that promotes trade and foreign investment in the country.

The pavilion will show the past, present and future of Mexico through three large screens that will display Mexico's history and ancient civilization; the current situation of major Mexican cities and the kite forest area on the green sl

ope that will show Mexico's main projects of sustainable development by interactive touch-screens.

The pavilion will look Amazing with the ceiling of kites. According to what I read the name for kite comes from the Nahuatl word papaloti that means butterfly which used to represent people’s aspirations to a better life, of development and flying.

The kites are from China and because of this they will be use as a symbol of friendship and the common element that will unite Mexico and China.

I think the Expo will be super interesting and I really want to go and look through the different pavilions. I knew about the expo because my dad told me about it and by chance it happened to be in the same days as the summer course that Tec offers to the high school students; therefore it is very likely that I go to China this summer.

Mexican immigrants in other countries

What is better? To live in your natal country with small probabilities of getting a job or to go to a completely different country with bigger probabilities of working?

Most mexicans chose the second alternative; they prefer to go to work to other places like the U.S, Canada or Europe even if they will be apart from their families, because they know they will probably get a better job than the one they could get in Mexico.

But, do they really know what they possibilities of working are? Even if they travel somewhere else, they still have the chance of not getting a job because they are not competely prepared to do so. They just emmigrate because they don't find chances here, but that doesn't mean they will find a better one abroad.

The Mexican government doesn't seem to be taking actions over this topic. It only seems to tell people that it can be dangerous to go somewhere else to work; however, it looks like it is not willing to educate people personally to tell them what the real situation is if they go to work to another place.

But then, what should the Mexican people do? They don't have work here, neither in another country. I believe its about education and culture; Mexicans should still try to live and work in Mexico even if its hard, I consider that better than going somewhere else because they don't take the risks that that would imply.

The Mexican government should also be warned about this problem. They must try to convince Mexicans than going somewhere is risky and try, at the highest possible point, to create more jobs especially for the poor people whose decision of living abroad is really tentative.

There are no jobs for us

A few weeks ago in the newspaper there was an article about labour expectations in México. It talked about how many young adults have an interest in working but have no job expectations. In 2009 with the population between 14 and 29 years old there was an 8.94% that had no labour expectations, which is the highest that has ever been. Why is this happening? Because of the crisis many companies have closed, investment is lower and salaries are too. The only ones who can aspire to have a job, that would probably not fit their expectations, are the ones with the higher level of education and with the best academic preparation. All this means that 2.7 million young adults don't have job aspirations. What is left for us to do is study harder and better, because until there are more jobs or more companies, which could take years or not happen, we need to be the best of the best, otherwise we won't be good enough even for a job consider to have a low rank. And according to experts, the vision of the future isn't getting any better.

Re-elections for presidency

I've always wondered how life in Mexico would be if we allowed a re-election for the president office. I think some good aspects could come along, but also some negative aspects would start appearing among people.

These all are personal opinions, but I believe someone should not be in the presidency more than 8-10 years because politic life would not be diverse and if one single person stays in presidency for longer than this, he/she will not let the political ambit evolve and will, eventually, lead to a catastrophe because those ideas would eventually change. Just like in a dictatorship, when the dictator dies, his ideas die with him and practically all his policies tend to change to diversify the political life.

So, coming back to Mexico, should the re-elections for presidency be allowed? In a more general perspective, I would say it's not really a matter of how many times you are in the presidency, but how much time you spend being in it. I think 6 years of presidency are fair enough to establish how you want the country to move and react, so then, why is some people saying they'd prefer a re-election?

At the end of the day, people will only think about what you did through your time being a president; so if you are president for a longer time, then you will have the opportunity to do more things. But here, we face another variant that make us think if we should allow re-elections: What is more important, quality or quantity? Would you rather stay in the presidency for 2 years and do massive positive changes or would you prefer be president for 10 years and make some minor positive changes through all that time?

I personally believe that quality is what we must care about. Just think about it; if in 2 years we do massive positive changes, who wouldn't want us back for another 2 years? That's where the re-elections come: in the moment where someone needs more time to keep the policies that have made people happy. In the case of the presidency of the cities (that lasts 3 years) I completely agree that re-election should be allowed because this small amount of time is not enough to show how much you can do and what your really ideals are. This really exemplifies the quality factor, because we take into consideration what we can do for our people in a reduced amount of time.

To finish I'd like to say that the re-elections are just a way of knowing how well a government has done through its governing time. Mexico still has a lot of problems to face before people can start thinking what is important: a new president or the same? However, some of the problems are due to the fact that Mexicans partially or totally ignore what the intention of their governors are. The thing we all still have to know is that presidents are humans; they are not perfect and they can't always do everything, so why not giving them a little bit more chance to try to do what they want and after that, I believe the choice of allowing re-elections or not should be important for us.

Violence in México: A problem for the US

As violence inscreased on Mexico, fear increased for the United States. A proof of this fear is that the Arizona governor, Jan Brewer, sent a letter to the White House asking for more federal resources at the border to stop human trafficking, drug trafficking and weapons. In this letter, Brewer pointed out the roads and uninhabited places in Arizona that have become the main steps or roads for illegal immigration, drug and arms trafficking.

When Barack Obama read the letter, 250 National Guard troops were sent to the task of Force Joint Counter Narco-Terrorism. But the force, actually only has 150 soldiers and military pilots of the National Guard, so they are still waiting for the troops to come so they can star working on it.

Pernsoally i think Mexico should be doing something about it too, because the violence is coming from our country i think our national forces are not strict enough or the thing is that they are very corrupt. Felipe Calderón must start working harder on this, but not only him but everyone to make this country less corrupt and more peaceful! .. I know Hillary Clinton came to Mexico to talk about it, and this things must not be forgoten, we should start working on it!.

Hypocrisy

Recently, I have been wondering why leaders of labor unions are so hypocrite; why they snivel and claim for better working conditions and then go to parties with people from the high society and bosses of the companies who abuse of workers, why they think they represent the whole syndicate with thousands of workers who are truly poor, but they live in large houses and eat caviar. Why?

One example of these 'glorious leaders' is Elba Esther Gordillo, one of the most powerful Mexican politicians. Yes, that woman that can provoke nightmares just with her face. She is the leader of SNTE (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación). Since she is the leader, many of her relatives work there and she demands about 120 million of dollars to support the syndicate. It is said that she uses this money dishonestly for her own benefit, and it is reported that she owns a house in San Diego, worth $5 millions of dollars. She is also very involved with Mexican politics. First, she belonged to PRI, but they turned her out: time ago, there was a controversy involving both her and Roberto Madrazo. Long story, but the thing is that now she supports PAN and even helped Felipe Calderón to win the federal elections, and because of this, she is linked to corruption since she used teachers and the syndicate to arrange the elections. What a teacher!

Other example is Joaquín Gamboa Pascoe, leader of CTM (Confederación de Trabajadores Mexicanos). And here is a lovely quote from him, '¿Qué, porque los trabajadores están jod... yo también debo estarlo?' Aw, that is so cute. This man is much known for being stupidly rich and collecting luxury cars. And, this fact is very interesting: He never was a worker, he only was a consultant, and then became leader. Since he is the leader, the amount of available money has decreased, which is very weird since he asks for moneys to other syndicates affiliated to the CTM. Moreover, he is a very conservative and traditional person, who basically has sort of frozen the syndicate with his attitude. Even the workers have said they do not feel represented by him, because of his glamour. Nice!

And last, but no least: Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, leader of Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores Mineros, Metalúrgicos y Similares de la República Mexicana. You must know him. Yeah, he is the guy who did not pay Cananea miners the money from Grupo México. He owes them $55 Million of dollars: The reason of Cananea problems. This man, as well as Gamboa Pascoe, never was a miner, and for just being leader of the miners, he is very rich. When Cananea mine was sold, Grupo México's intention was to pay the miners, but Gómez Urrutia never paid them. As he did not find any excuse and the police was chasing him, he moved to Canada, and now is neighbor of Pamela Anderson. The most representative of his leadership is the amount of strikes: 200 in 8 years. Because of this man, Cananea economy is totally collapsed. Bravo!

I do not mean that labor leaders must be poor; they must be humble and thoughtful. There are thousands of teachers, workers and miners who live in unfair conditions and these leaders are doing nothing, but stealing. This must change. They are supposed to be the representatives of the workers, and they are just becoming dishonest leaders and politicians.

Where is Mexico Going?

I was reading the New York Times and an opinion article caught my attention because it was about Mexico. The article talked about a recent phenomenon in some Mexican cities; the article refers to it as the “art of renting”. This basically consists on renting a person for any purpose. For example: if you are arrested for whatever minor crime, you can rent a person to spend the nights in jail you were given; or you can rent a person to be your signatory for a “legal” business deal.

I was more than ashamed people from our country are actually doing this. I haven’t read about any of this on the newspapers from Hermosillo. I think it must be a really big deal in other bigger cities because the New York Times is talking about it. I can’t believe this people are willing to leave their dignity aside in order to get money. What’s going on with us? In these times of economic crisis, a lot of employments have been lost. I never imagined we will get to that point. If you think about it, it is a new kind of prostitution. People are paying someone else to spend time in jail in their place. I never thought that was even possible. We are definitely going beyond all levels of corruption and injustice. We are also suffering from a lot of insecurity in Mexico. The drug-related violence is worse than ever and all over the country. I used to believe Hermosillo was a safe city but not anymore. We have no idea what may happen to us as we walk down to the grocery store, as we eat with our family at a restaurant or as we hang out outside our school. Just like the two students from Tec de Monterrey who died tragically.

Renting people will affect the economy and our society if we do not stop it. Imagine all the crimes that will not be punished. This may become a major problem in the future. Today it is really hard for the government to impose the law. Our president is having a really hard time taking control of the drug-related situation in the country. It is such a shame that our justice system cannot do anything to better our security. Our police department is contaminated by criminals all over the place. These made me question on whether our government has the power an actual government should have or not. We learned in class about several countries where the government has no longer control of its people. I am concerned and really afraid we might me heading to that point.

Economic Crisis in Mexico

When this economic recession started in the United States, few people worried about what could happen in other countries, fewer people though what could happen in Mexico with this crisis. When there is a problem about economics in the US, it is impossible to ignore that it will affect also our country.

When president Calderon said at the beginning of 2008 that Mexico would not feel the effect of this crisis, I almost laugh. How a country like ours that exports almost a 80% of it products to the United States (the country that started this crisis) will not even "feel" the big economic recession.

Today I found a note in the newspaper La Jornada, that Mexico will be the last country of Latin America that will go out from the crisis, and also that was the most affected during 2009 according to BID (Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo).

This organism determined Mexican economy will need at least one more year than other Latin America nations to recover the growing and GDP (Gross Domestic Product) levels. This is obviously because our economy depends a lot on the United States, the same thing happen with most of Central America countries like Panama and Costa Rica.

It has been tough situation for all the world, is unbelievable that there was people that said "nothing will happen here in Mexico, this is a 'gringos' situation". We are now watching the results, we just need to keep handling the best we can our capital, do not ask for loans if we know we don't will be able to pay them. The nightmare will over in a year, we need to keep holding it.

The cost of abusing

On thursday I was reading the paper and I came across a really intersting column by Leo Zuckermann called "Los costos del abuso". In this column, he talks about how here in México everyone abuses of the easy things. To explain this he gives the example of the canadian visa, he explains how we as mexicans were given the oportunity to live there as refuges, if we needed it. In this system they went in as mexicans and aplied to be in the system, for the time they needed to do research and consider if you really needed "shelter" they supplied them with income, as well as free education and health services. Mexicans started to take advantage of this, and even when they didn't fit the standards to be refugees they stayed there as illegals. The canadian government realized that people were doing this, and now we all have to pay the price and going to Canada is much more difficult.

This hasn't just happened in this case, it happens with everything, and it is why we have to make all those long lines and fill all those papers, because we abuse. He also compares México with the United Kingdom, because he had the experience to be as a student there, and he was surprised when they lent him a lot of money, a friend of his from them told him it was because they trusted him.

I believe that we, as individuals should change our behavior and use the oportunities we are given wisely, and not abusing, because they can take it away from us. Besides, the government is investing more than they should in making this strict regimens, we shouldn't need them to do that, we should be able to take advantage of something without abusing.

The Narcotic in a point of view helps Mexican Economy.

I think that this guys "Mafiosos" are moving a great quantity of money nowdays, maybe its offensive to Mexico that without this guys maybe the Mexican Economy be worst.

What I want to let know people with this post is that Mexico should be ashame of our economy.

Bimbo, Just bread?

Bimbo is a company or firm that not just sells bread for money, I admire this company because it helps Mexico in different ways: like a economic way, in helping people like Opus Dei(a religious institution),also in giving good services to all the people that work in this firm, helping the poor people, and alot of many things.

I didn't know how to asociete Bimbo with this class, but I just realized that theres alot of factors that made me understand the relation , like I said before : Helps Mexican Economy , alot of families depend in Bimbo.

Something that I learned while I was doing this post was that Bimbo is now using the first hybrid truck to distrubute the bread they produce.

In conclusion , we should learn like firms like this , they don't just want money.

Mexico recovers from the crisis

The crisis has hitten Mexico. That's a fact that no one can deny.
Mexico has tried to do things to support the crisis. That's something we may believe in or not. But what we can be sure of, is the fact that Mexico has shown strength when it came to facing the crisis.

According to the president, Felipe Calderón, Mexico will have a growth of 4% in its economy after having went down more than 5%. He also mentioned that there is less risk of entering and settling in the country than before. He said Mexico has made a good job in general when it came to the current crisis and that it's hoping the forecasts for the country to be positive.

I personally think that Mexico has, in fact, done a good job facing the current global crisis. Although it has suffered a lot, we can't deny that for a lot of people it was a surprise the performance the country had.
One of the things I like to admire is the positivity that some people put in it. I think that if we are positive and look to think good things will come and we should not be afraid of doing things, that way, the economy could grow in an easier way. I believe we shouldn't assume everything will be perfect, but we must try to see that there are good things now shaping our country.

Poverty in Acapulco

We all know Acapulco as a top destination in Mexico. Receiving a lot of turists per year, Acapulco is a prove of the development that Mexico has shown during the last years. However, we usually see Acapulco as a recreational paradise, but is the rest of Acapulco the way we imagine it?

Acapulco is one of the cities with more rural poverty. About 24% of its population has barely nothing to eat. Their diet consists on the most simple and basic food, while some other people spend 1 or 2 days without doing so.
Another problems also come with the potable water and the cost of land. About 10% of Acapulco has no drinkable water, and many houses do not have a proper housing.

I think that this is a precise example of the inequal distribution of the income within Mexico. We have a lot of people getting richer everyday while the rest continues to live in the same social status level. I think the government of Mexico should focus, besides other issues, about really caring about its people. We have a mixture of culture along with corruption and personal interests that don't allow us to give people what they need and only look for a personal benefit.
Mexico has still a lot to progress, I believe there should be more campaigns about combatting poverty in Mexico. I think by doing this, Mexico will become a more stable country starting from its foundations.

Resolution to Mexican Truck issue may be near

A group of 56 U.S. lawmakers have urged the Obama administration to resolve a dispute with Mexico over cross-border trucking that has damaged bilateral trade, Reuters reported.

The current situation is “unsustainable and untenable,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter sent to U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

I think that both Mexico and USA should work immediately in a solution to this problems and that it ensures the safety of the truck drivers and it normalizes the trade between the two countries. I also thing that it is having a very negative impact, particularly on the agricultural industries in the USA.

What is going on with people?

Since the year when Calderon became president, I have been wondering, what is going on with people? Why do they complain of the national situation but still vote for mediocre candidates? WHY?

First, I want to write about Sonora. Before the tragedy of ABC, everything was alright; Elías Serrano and Pano Salido were the favorites candidates, all indicated that they would win the election. But then, suddenly a daycare named ABC burned down. People not only in Hermosillo, but also in Mexico were concerned about the babies and how to heal the surviving babies. But then, I am not sure of the stupid guy who came and told that relatives of Eduardo Bours were the daycare's owners, and about IMSS and that it was their fault and bla bla bla. And all people started to chase them until they went to jail. Only a few people still were concerned about the babies and how to send them to a hospital specialized in burns in the United States. Even though it was actually their fault, Elías Serrano, Pano Salido and us did not have to pay for it. People in Sonora started to think that the two candidates were just like them and among other things. But, are they the same just because they belong to the same political party? I don't think so. I still keep thinking if Sonorenses are so spiteful that they prefered to vote for two guy, who actually look like thieves, than to keep their decision, to be strong, to move forward. "But, is that the tragedy of ABC was a crucial factor." Not true at all. The old governor did many good things for Sonora, and he made some mistakes as well. HELLO, HE IS A HUMAN, TOO! But, did he do something when their friends and relatives went to jail? He did nothing. However, I wonder why people didn't think twice before voting. Now, they complain about tandeo and that they barely have water when they need it, but they mainly complain about insecurity and all the crimes that have took place in Sonora in the past months. Where is your wonderful and fabulous Guillermo Padrés Elías? What has he done, besides taking your water away? Has he solved any problem? What about the economic crisis? Does Sonora have enough jobs? Are people staying here, or they prefer moving to the US? I'm not writing about the bald guy who is supposed to be our mayor, because I don't really know what he has done. I think his wife has done more things, but I really dislike her, and I'll explain it: My mom is a teacher in kindergarden that is located in Olivares, before Javier Gandara won the election and the daycare burned down, this "high-class lady" came by and told the principal of the kindergarden where my mom works, that they would build something else there because she pleased. Oh please! Her husband hadn't won the election yet, and she was already planning. I wonder why people complains if they were the ones who made that happen.

The Amero

Wouldn’t it be nice to have just one currency in America?

But what canwe do to accomplish that? Once, I heard somebody that was saying that Canada, the U.S.A, and Mexico had this strange idea of unifying their currencies and call it the amero, but then he said that it was impossible. I wondered why, at the moment I didn’t give it enough attention. With the pass of time I asked myself if it was possible and I discovered that in order to do that, these countries would have to either balance their economies or have problems with it.

If they balance their economy (more less have the same currency value), they will have to increase Mexico’s economy and/or decrease US’s (which I don’t think will happen) to convert their currency to just one. If they join their currencies without a balance, it might happen that Mexico will have several problems because he would not be “strong” enough to support this and Mexico’s economy will be in a hurry.

Beside all these, wouldn’t it be nice to have just one currency and don’t have to worry every time the dollar increases? Maybe Mexico will have a boost in its economy because Canada and the US will push it. This currency, I think, will have the opportunity to fight against Europe. It will have many disadvantages but also many benefits.

Mexican Peso vs. American Dollar

It’s amazing how come that the value of one currency towards another can affect many people’s lives. In the sense that if taking the example of the Dollar (U.S.A.) against the Peso (Mexican); if the Dollar increases its value, many people in Mexico will “suffer” (maybe because Mexico’s economy mostly relies on USA’s) because they will not have enough money to buy things from the USA or even they’ll have troubles solving their debts because they will increase, talking in pesos. But in contrast if the dollar decreases, towards the peso, everybody will buy dollars and go to the USA to buy thing because they “have” money.

I wonder how can they know the relationship between these currencies. I know that this relationship depends on; obviously, the American economy in contrast to the Mexican’s and vice versa, also the inflation of each country. But what factors influence this? Anyway what I try to explain with this, is the fact that a change in any currency can affect many people’s lives, even if the change was not in their country’s currency (as we can see in the example with the U.S. and Mexico.)

The consequences of the change of the currency’s value can vary from insignificant to genocide (dead of many people). For example: the insignificant consequences (mostly when it had changed few cents), you can buy “more” for less, but if the change is huge, the consequences can be from Mexicans buying more from the US to the genocide because people’s debts increase a lot (e.g. what happened in Mexico in 1964, that the dollar increased a lot and many Mexicans that had debts in the USA, committed suicide because their debts increased a lot).
