There are no jobs for us

A few weeks ago in the newspaper there was an article about labour expectations in México. It talked about how many young adults have an interest in working but have no job expectations. In 2009 with the population between 14 and 29 years old there was an 8.94% that had no labour expectations, which is the highest that has ever been. Why is this happening? Because of the crisis many companies have closed, investment is lower and salaries are too. The only ones who can aspire to have a job, that would probably not fit their expectations, are the ones with the higher level of education and with the best academic preparation. All this means that 2.7 million young adults don't have job aspirations. What is left for us to do is study harder and better, because until there are more jobs or more companies, which could take years or not happen, we need to be the best of the best, otherwise we won't be good enough even for a job consider to have a low rank. And according to experts, the vision of the future isn't getting any better.

Unemployment

A mayor economic indicator that economy is doing well is the employment and unemployment percentage in the country. If there is less unemployment then the economy is increasing, because if there is more people working, it means that the country is generating more money and they will be able to produce more goods and services, then they can sell the goods and generate money. But if there is more unemplyment in the country than everything is going to get worse because then they are going to increase taxes and other things. When this happens then it is harder for the economy to increase because then you cannot consume as much goods as you would want and everything just gets harder.

Unemployment is terrible because not only is is frustrating to know that the money you own, half will go to taxes and the rest will have to be divided into all your expenses, like food, clothing, gas, electricity, water and many other things, and because you are to tight in money you hve to cut back on most of those things and buy only the essentials, this is not a very good feeling.

So the best thing to do to increase the economy is to create more jobs, invest in companies thay will help increase the countries economy.

Crisis and Unemployment

It was not until my first day of school in Hermosillo Sonora, about a semester ago, that I realized that the economic crisis had reached me. What was I doing here? I mean, I had a perfectly good life in my previous city and I didn’t want to move. But it all started in 2007, when the crisis began hitting the United States and as a consequence, Mexico.
Huge firms and corporations have had lots of trouble since this all started. My dad worked at a very important firm in Latin America which is called Femsa. Today, another executive kept my dad’s job, his own job, and the one of another man, remaining with the same salary and now a job that’s supposed to be done by three.
It was sad to know my dad wouldn’t work anymore for a company that had been his life for about 20 years, but I couldn’t stop feeling relieved about him not being so stressed anymore. It’s true that the last years were full of heavy tasks and stressful projects, and I was glad that it all ended. But what is the remaining executive going to do with that triple stress charge? Is it healthy that companies cut their expenditures with the salaries of employees and let the ones remaining suffering the consequences? I guess they don’t have any other option. I guess this crisis didn’t leave a good variety of options for anybody, at least that, as in the picture, they had a super high degree of studies completed.
Unemployment was the most tangible effect of the crisis. All over my country I listen to situations related to this, and I think that this topic isn’t just about losing a job, having less money, and later finding another one; it is something way more serious and deep, and my case could be one example. Losing a job can imply moving from one city to another, losing a house, gaining debts with a bank, the frustration of future plans, etc.
Some people say that this crisis is heading towards stability, but I don’t think so. I’ve heard in the past weeks about several people that are still losing their jobs because firms just can’t handle this. I have no idea when this is going to end, but I think that the Mexican state should, at least in this stage, interfere a little bit more with projects and actions, and not just wait for the United States to be stable again and enjoy that.
So my dad got another job here in Hermosillo and my family and I moved. Therefore, me being here is a direct consequence of this crisis and its high rate of unemployment, and I can’t stop thinking how it changed my life.

Women At Work

I was reading a news article about a girl who got fired from her job when her boss found out she was pregnant. She worked at a bar and the owner did not let her keep her job if she was pregnant. Sadly, this girl was neither the first nor the last woman who will suffer from this unfairness. Women have struggled for decades to reach for equality and stop discrimination. It is a great step that we can go to work and have the same opportunities of growing professionally than men. I feel very proud and grateful for those women who stood up for themselves and were not afraid of being different. We owe them all the opportunities we have today.

I think it is really unfair to discriminate women in general when it comes to a job. A woman needs it as much as the man does and both are perfectly capable of doing it. A woman who is pregnant should not be fired. Her rights are being violated. It is stated in the law that pregnant women have the right to have some days off in order to take care of their baby and that you cannot fire them because of their state. Leaving aside the legal part, what about your ethics? Do you think firing a perfectly capable person just because she is expecting a baby is the right thing to do? Would you like your sister or mother to be in a situation like this? Those women are carrying another life inside of them. Firing a pregnant woman would be like firing someone because is short, has a big family, has a different skin color, or any other characteristic.

Today, unemployment is a major world issue. There are more people than jobs, so competition is all over the place. If pregnant women are discriminated they won’t have a chance to find a decent job to support their family. If people (women and men) have a job, they have money so they become consumers. If they are consumers they can buy more products and services. This way economy is stimulated. That is why we must promote employment and do not fire anyone for unfair reason; we are just hurting the economy. We can stop unemployment from growing by not discriminating women.

Unemployment in Hermosillo

As we have seen in class unemployment is an issue that derives from overpopulation. It has to do with the distribution of jobs and not having enough for all the people. This later on leads to immigration and so on. But right now we are focusing in how we can see unemployment in Mexico. I think we all are aware that this is a problem that has been talked about since a long time ago, but right now it is only getting worst.
With the change in the government in September many people have lost their jobs in government offices. There was more employees than needed, and those people were fired. Even here in Hermosillo, at the former "Hospital Materno Infantil", there were what they call temporal workers. These people have a contract for six months and they renewed it every time it finished with the last government. When it changed these people weren't payed for a month, but when they did, they fired them. I understand that they are trying to save money and maybe even think about efficiency, but some of them were known for being really good at what they did. Taking away their jobs from people just to do so is not a good reason, maybe saving money is, but there are more things than that to take into consideration. This actions aren't fair, they are not well thought, and it isn't the thing that would lead them to be better.
