It starts with you

I was doing my ethics homework and I got this idea of doing this blog post about it. I mean, we are all talking about global problems, problems in our society or in other societies; and we should really start to take some action for every one of them.

As answered some questions about values I came to the sense that it starts at the individual level. We know what values are, we have a moral code, we know what right and what is wrong. We should all think about the actions we do every day, even when you brush your teeth, you should think about it and consider if there is something you could do to make it be better to conrtibute for a greater good. Big steps start with small actions, lets save water, treat everyone with respect, don't throw trash on the floor, use your car less, be honest, be responsible, be respectful, and do all the good things that you can do. Every day when you are about to go to sleep, think back on your day and see what you did to help, trust me, you will feel better.

Ethics

Ethics is concerned with how to live human life. Humans turned out to be far more dangerous than any other animal; the intelligence makes us extremely useful and valuable. Human treatment is to try to put you in the other person shoes, taking into account their rights and understand their reasons. Our interests are relative, except the interest of being human among us and without it there can’t be a good life. It means to feel sympathy for others. Life is too complex and subtle, people too different, too varied situations and intimate. Everyone is free and fair for oneself to live well. To understand what the other can hope from you, also love is needed, it is also very important; who lives must be capable of a sympathetic justice or a fair compassion.

Ethics can be applied at any field, and business is not the exception. In business, firms want the highest profit for the company, most of the time despite the ecological or social cost.

Apply the ethics in business means ethics in a professional field; examining ethical problems that take place (arise) in a business environment. It is basically that corporations keep a character of honesty, fairness and humanness. In some cases, corporations have redefined their values; however, the practice of ethics is not an instrument for image building.

People should realize that in order to live a civilized society we have to take part of it, acting in a human way, consequences will come if we don’t behave according to the time we are living. How would the world be if all though the same way a corrupted a business man does?.. A global disaster for sure.

Modern democracy has attempted to establish these minimum requirements, called human rights and people must demand them to be practiced towards them and others.

Everyone must behave in a civilized way, respect others, and have as our priority the healthy relations with people and not just the self-interest and benefit.

Puerto Rican Doctors in Haiti

As we know, Haiti has been needing help, especially doctors. Many countries from many different parts of the world send doctors to the devastated country to help people suffering from disease and injuries. But, the Puerto Rican case got my attention: They created a Facebook group in which they uploaded photos of their patients (without their permission obviously), dead people and even themselves with drink in their hands and guns from the Haitian military.

All started when the earthquake left thousands of injured and dead people, so Puerto Rico decided to send doctors and nurses, who went to Haiti willingly. Being there, they did help people, performed surgeries, among other things that needed to be done. But one day, some of these doctors had the wonderful idea of creating a group in Facebook named: "Salvemos a Haiti (Senado de Puerto Rico)". In this group, they uploaded not only their experiences, but also photos. In these photos, Haitian people appeared being attended by the doctors and even nude in some cases. In others, the doctors appeared in parties with alcholic drinks and guns. When they returned to Puerto Rico, they expected to be praised as heroes and instead, people criticized them and even damaged their properties. And this was known worldwide, since these photos were published in newspapers. Now, the authorities are thinking about removing them their licenses because they broke the ethic code of doctors. Sincerely, I hope they do.

By the way, I'm not publishing photos of Haitian people, but of the doctors. Haitian people don't deserve to be shown all around the Internet. And, now that I'm looking at these stupid, drunk, smiling doctors, I wonder if their patients are smiling as well.

Still A Lot To Do

After several days of the Haiti Earthquake, it seems that there is still big problems going on that city. According to a recent new I read, Bill Clinton stayed that there is a lot of people that still need help. Giving a hand to those people is still very difficult because of the lack of organization. Mr. Clinton visited Port-du-Prince to "try to identify the things that aren't being done and need to be speeded up and fill thos blanks". I think that this man is doing a great humanitary job because is total chaos in Haiti. There are still people sleeping in the streets and lacking of a good health care system. According to the article too, there is about 1 million people that need aid. I hope that countries like ours could do more to help this poor country. Sadly, some news like the one of Cabaña's shot is taking away the spotlight of more important and urgent issues. After the magnitude 7.0 earthquake, officals said that 212,000 people died. Why do people are more impacted when one "celebrity" is shot than when a group of people is killed? Don't they deserve the attention because they aren't famous? They are humans, just like us. About 315 markeshift were installed around the city. It's sad to hear that these people who once have a home, lost it all. There are about 16 main distribution food centers around the country. However the lack of security in this place made difficult for person to obtain help. Some people asaulted trailers packed with food and water. This made me think that the situation over there is chaotic, like the survival of the fittest. Moral ethic values are on the floor. Another question that popped in my head is, do morals and ethics are completely forgotten in situations like this? I mean we can study the theory and applied it in some aspects of our life, but if a great natural disaster like this one happen in our city, will we lost all our sanity and just follow our instinct? Desperate situtations like this one is a clear example that when you live a tragedy personally it is a whole different world.
